We're really impressed with the quality on offer here, with solid V-brakes, Shimano gearing, and nice thick tyres. It's genuinely a cut above most offerings in this age bracket. The 8 speeds are more than enough for climbing most hills and the brakes will make sure you can stop when zooming down the other side. And there are even mudguards to stop as much of the splashes as possible.
