It really is built for the commute.  To power you around the streets it has a Shimano Nexus hub gear system which offers you 8 speeds to choose from which are more than enough to get you around town. The fact that the gears are tucked away in the rear hub means that they are protected from the elements so require a lot less maintenance! Result!
